Job description:
Rights & Security International (RSI) is seeking an Eastern Africa Human Rights Assistant to help us take our international work to the next level, especially regarding rights in Kenya and other locations in Eastern Africa. The successful candidate will provide administrative, outreach and research support to the work of the Team Leader on International Civic Space, and will take part in our collaborative and anti-colonial approach to relationship-building.
The initial contract will be for 12 months. Depending on funding and other factors, an extension may be offered. However, this is not guaranteed.

Person specification:
RSI is looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented candidate who has:
- A degree in law, human rights, peace studies, international affairs, social sciences or another relevant field.
- A basic understanding of the UN human rights system.
- Familiarity with the social and political landscape in at least one country in Eastern Africa as well as relevant cultural competence. We are especially interested in candidates whose experience relates to Kenya, but will consider candidates with expertise in another context in Eastern Africa.
- Experience with outreach and coalition-building among human rights or activist groups.
- Exceptional organisational and planning skills.
- Strong research and writing skills.
- A strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace
Responsibilities:
- This role will entail two days of work per week.
- Support the drafting of reports for upcoming Universal Periodic Reviews by the UN.
- Keep well organised records of contacts and event details.
- Assist with desk-based research on the impact of counterterrorism and national security laws in selected Global South countries.
- Attend online meetings and keep records of the discussions and agreements.
- Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director and/or the Team Leader on International Civic Space.
