RWUK DISAPPOINTED THAT THERESA VILLIERS DECIDED NOT TO PROVIDE BALLYMURPHY FAMILIES WITH OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE TRUTH AND JUSTICE

Rights Watch (UK) is disappointed that Theresa Villiers has decided not to provide the Ballymurphy families with the opportunity to receive the truth and justice they deserve. With over 75 cases relating to conflict killings awaiting still awaiting decisions from inquests the process is taking to long to be effective, and is delaying access to justice for the families.

Yasmine Ahmed, director of Rights Watch (UK) comments that:

u201cThe state must accept responsibility for ensuring that there is proper independent accountability for the actions of those who act on its behalf, and that this accountability is timely and open. The UK Government has repeatedly failed to provide this for the Ballymurphy families and they now more than ever deserve a swift answer to the questions surrounding the deaths of their loved ones. The inquest system in Northern Ireland is stretched beyond braking point, and brings no real chance of access to the truth at any point in the near future. This case has gone on for far too long, and it is the Governments duty to take measures to ensure that the families gain the truth they need at the earliest possible opportunity.u201d
