Still no inquiry into state sanctioned murder of Patrick Finucane

Rights Watch (UK) are extremely disappointed that the Finucane family have once again been denied the public inquiry that they deserve. We continue to believe that a public inquiry is the only way to access the truth and to ensure that the Government is held to account in this case.

Yasmine Ahmed, Director of Rights Watch UK, states:

u201cWe are deeply disappointed with the judgment this morning that the Governments decision not to hold a public inquiry into the murder of Patrick Finucane was lawful. This is despite the Court acknowledging that the UK Government colluded in his murder and that subsequent investigations into his death lacked independence and effectiveness.

We are concerned that the Court felt unable to scrutinise the Governments decision not to hold a public inquiry because it involved macro-political issues. It is the role of the Courts to do just that. This is all the more important when it concerns the decision of the Government not to adequately investigate its involvement in an extrajudicial execution.

Rights Watch (UK) continues to call for a full independent public inquiry. Our deepest sympathy goes to the family of Patrick Finucane whose 26 year wait for justice continues.u201d
