RSI Submission to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The UK is being reviewed by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on its compliance with the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). We’ve submitted written evidence on the current country situation as it relates to the UK’s obligations under the ICERD on the following issues:

  • The UK’s expansive powers to deprive people arbitrarily of their British citizenship on national security grounds, and the far-reaching consequences these powers have on people from minority and migrant communities.
  • The ‘Prevent’ counter-terrorism strategy and how it disproportionately affects people of colour, Muslims, and other minority groups in the UK without effective oversight or evaluation.
  • The urgent need to address the State Party’s immigration authorities’ misuse of the Common Travel Area between the State Party and the Republic of Ireland, as well as various public bodies’ failures to address hate speech and hate crime, particularly in relation to intimidation and state supported housing for people on low incomes.
