EVENT: Retrogression of Human Rights Protections in Northern Ireland

The New York City Bar Association and Rights and Security International are delighted to invite you to a webinar on the human rights implications of plans to deal with the legacy of the conflict in Northern Ireland and on plans to reform the Human Rights Act. From the City Bar, this event is sponsored by the International Human Rights Committee and co-sponsored by the Council on International Affairs and the European Affairs Committee

In July 2021, the UK government proposed a controversial set of new measures for dealing with the legacy of the conflict in Northern Ireland — most notably an amnesty — which would stop victims and survivors from accessing justice. If implemented, these proposals, could also violate international human rights laws which require effective investigations into conflict-related deaths and other serious human rights abuses.

Then, in December 2021, the UK government announced plans to significantly reduce the nature and degree of human rights protection across the country. These measures will likely undermine the peace agreement in Northern Ireland.

This retrogression of human rights protections in Northern Ireland must be stopped.

We are bringing together lawyers and practitioners from the UK and the US to discuss the proposed legislation through a legal lens and to gain the opportunity for informed engagement with the legal issues that these plans raise.
