RSI submits evidence to the Ireland/Northern Ireland Protocol Sub-Committee on the NI Protocol Bill’s human rights implications
3rd November 2022
Today, RSI submitted evidence to a House of Lords Sub-Committee on the human rights implications of the pending Northern Ireland Protocol Bill.
In this submission, we argue that:
- The UK government should preserve the existing terms of the Protocol — withdrawing the Protocol Bill — or negotiate a settlement with the EU;
- Under no circumstances should the Article 2 of the Protocol, which requires no diminution of human rights standards in Northern Ireland, be amended or undermined; and
- The UK government should also stop pending legislation which threatens to undermine the human rights framework in Northern Ireland, for instance by reforming the Human Rights Act 1998.
